How to Deal with Dry Skin with Bumps

Are you dealing with dry skin with red bumps? It could be keratosis pilaris. Sometimes referred to as chicken skin, this is a common skin condition that’s characterized by pimple-like bumps, usually developing on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. In this post, we’ll explore dry skin with bumps in more detail, covering different symptoms and natural treatment options. Read on!

Please keep in mind that although what we discuss in this post can relieve eczema, we are not medical professionals. If you're experiencing severe eczema symptoms like an infection, it is best to seek medical advice immediately.

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is a genetic skin condition that causes patches of rough-feeling bumps to appear on the skin. It’s caused by a buildup of keratin, a hard protein that protects the skin from harmful substances. These bumps are actually the buildup of keratin plugging hair follicles. While the condition is generally harmless and may naturally go away by the time a person reaches 30, there are ways to manage symptoms and prevent them from getting worse. The condition is not contagious.

What Does Keratosis Pilaris Look Like?

Keratosis pilaris is also known as chicken skin because of its goose-bump-like appearance. Because the bumps appear where hair follicles exist, the condition will never develop in locations like the palms of hands or soles of feet. The bumps may be rough and cause the skin to have a sandpaper-like texture. Depending on skin tone, the bumps can appear in different colors including white, pink, brown, red, or black. You may also experience dry skin with itchy bumps or irritable skin.

Who gets Keratosis Pilaris?

Anyone can develop keratosis pilaris, however, it is more likely to affect those with dry skin or eczema. In fact, the condition tends to get worse during the winter months when temperatures are cooler and humidity levels are lower. Because dry skin tends to make this condition worse, pregnant women are also more likely to develop keratosis pilaris. It also tends to be more common in those with fair skin. Finally, while it can develop at any age, children seem to be more susceptible. The condition usually begins in late infancy or adolescence and in many cases, is completely gone by age 30.
